The Great Leaders (March 2022)

“Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”

The whole world celebrated International Women’s Day On 8th March with this theme.

But are we on the right track towards achieving gender equality?

We all know that the pandemic disproportionately impacted the lives of women and girls across the globe. According to the World Bank’s “Women, Business and the Law 2022” report, around 2.4 billion women of working age are not afforded the equal economic opportunity and 178 countries maintain legal barriers that prevent their full economic participation. In 86 countries, women face some form of job restriction and 95 countries do not guarantee equal pay for equal work.

Globally, women still have only three-quarters of the legal rights afforded to men — an aggregate score of 76.5 out of a possible 100, which denotes complete legal parity.

However, Despite the Pandemic, 23 Countries have reformed their laws in 2021, to take the much-needed steps towards advancing women’s economic inclusion, according to the report.

This gives us great hope for the future.

For us at GCPIT, Women’s Day is never a one day affair. The last few months were very exciting for us, meeting and interacting with the amazing women leaders from across the globe, who were our nominees for the Global Women in Leadership Awards 2022. We thank all the leaders, who took out the time from their busy schedule to fill in our nomination forms and write their stories in such detail that many a time, our eyes were filled with tears reading about the struggles and hurdles they faced during their journey towards global leadership. We received 451 nominations this year and we went through every nomination carefully before deciding the winners of these awards. Initially, only 125 winners were planned, then we increased the number to 150, seeing the quality of work these amazing leaders are doing.

These interviews provided a huge learning opportunity for us and we decided to cover these stories in our “The Great Leaders Magazine”, which you have been reading from our first edition.

The knowledge that every woman across the globe is facing the same problems, be it at home, at the workplace or in the community, was an eye-opener for us. But we believe this is just a starting point.

Together, we need to build a thriving community where women are valued, as Michelle Obama said.

It is time we realize that gender equality isn’t just a women’s issue — it’s a human one.

Happy Reading!!!
